When Life Doesn’t Make Sense: What I Know to Be True About God (Episode 48)
When life doesn’t make sense, what can we hold onto?
In this episode of A Widow’s Life, Vickie and Cindy talk about the truths they have learned to return to when circumstances feel overwhelming, prayers seem unanswered, and the future feels uncertain.
Grief can leave us asking hard questions: Why did this happen? Why did God allow it? When will things change? While we may not always have the answers, we can remind ourselves of what we know about the character of God.
God is good.
God is faithful.
God loves us.
God is with us.
And He will never leave us or forsake us.
Cindy shares a powerful story from a difficult season in her life when it seemed like everything was going wrong. In the middle of the frustration, she found herself declaring out loud, “God is good. He loves me. He’s merciful. He’s faithful.” Years later, that moment of faith became an example her daughter remembered during a difficult season of her own.
Vickie also shares about a time after losing Barry when several painful circumstances piled up at once and she wondered how much more she could handle. An unexpected message from her pastor reminded her to keep praying, keep believing, and keep standing in the gap for her family.
Together, they explore the difference between knowing about God and truly knowing Him personally. The more time we spend with Him—through prayer, His Word, and remembering His faithfulness—the more deeply we learn to trust His character even when our circumstances haven’t changed yet.
They also encourage listeners to create their own “book of remembrance”—a record of the times God has shown up, answered prayer, provided encouragement, or carried them through something difficult. Those memories can become anchors of faith when another hard season comes.
If life feels uncertain today, take some time to remind yourself of what you know to be true:
“My God is good to me.”
“My God is faithful to me.”
“My God loves me.”
“My God will never leave me.”
Your feelings may change from day to day, but God’s character does not.
We hope this episode encourages you to keep trusting, keep praying, and keep getting to know the God who promises to walk with you through every valley.
